Troy-D Wreck
Dive Type : Wreck/Artificial Reef
Maxdepth : 26m
Experience : Experienced open water diver
The Troy D was successfully scuttled on Saturday 10 February 2007 at about 12.30 pm. The ship had been prepared in Sydney before being towed to Triabunna. It was towed into position in the Mercury Passage off Maria Island with about 120 spectator boats out there to watch the spectacle.
After a short delay, all boats were moved out of the 1 km exclusion zone and the count down began. There was a large flash and bang, which was only for show as the cutting charges used to actually sink the ship made very little noise, and the ship started to sink. After about 11/2 minutes the ship had disappeared from sight and Tasmania had it first wreck scuttled specifically for divers.
The wreck now sits at 26m, attracting a myriad of marine life including resident crayfish, ling, cod, wrasse, leather-jackets, schools of mackeral, seals and dolphins. The preparation of the wreck has enabled divers to gain access to every compartment of the ship.
